1986년은 시드니 폴락 감독의 영화 ‘아웃 오브 아프리카(1985)’가 아카데미 시상식에서 최우수 작품상을 수상한 해이기도 하지만, 개인적으로는 더 선호하는 작품인 스티븐 스필버그 감독의 ‘컬러 퍼플(1985)’이 아쉽게도 같은 부문에서 고배를 마신 해로 기억됩니다. 

컬러 퍼플은 1900년대 초반 미국 남부 조지아주의 가난한 흑인 마을을 배경으로, 오랜 세월 억압 속에서 살아온 여성 셀리 해리스(우피 골드버그 분)의 삶과 그녀의 자아 발견, 그리고 여성들 간의 연대를 감동적으로 그려낸 서사극입니다. 

영화 속에서 '미스 셀리의 블루스(시스터)'라는 노래를 부른 이는 실제로는 가수 타타 베가였지만, 극 중에서 셀리와 깊은 유대감을 나누며 연대를 보여준 슈그 에이버리 역의 마가렛 에이버리가 이 노래를 부르는 장면으로 많은 이들의 기억에 남아 있습니다. 이 곡은 저 개인에게도 각별한 의미를 지닌, 매우 애정하는 스탠다드 넘버 중 하나입니다.

1986 was the year when Sydney Pollack’s film Out of Africa (1985) won the Academy Award for Best Picture. However, for me personally, it is also remembered as the year when The Color Purple (1985), a film I much prefer, sadly went unrecognized in that same category.

Set in a poor African-American community in rural Georgia in the early 1900s, The Color Purple is a deeply moving epic that portrays the life of Celie Harris (played by Whoopi Goldberg), a woman who endures years of oppression before gradually discovering her sense of self and strength through the solidarity of the women around her.

The song “Miss Celie’s Blues (Sister),” featured in the film, was actually sung by vocalist Táta Vega, but it is remembered by many through the on-screen performance by actress Margaret Avery, who played Shug Avery—a character who forms a powerful emotional bond with Celie and helps her reclaim her voice.

This song holds a special place in my heart as well; it remains one of my most beloved standard numbers.
