1911년 10월 10일, 중화민국이 건국되었습니다. 혁명에 참여한 단체들은 손문을 임시 대총통으로 세웠으나, 곧 권력욕에 사로잡힌 원세개에게 대총통 자리를 양보할 수밖에 없었습니다. 여전히 크고 작은 무장 군벌 세력들이 결탁하거나 양성되어 백성에 대한 식민 약탈을 가속화하던 어지럽고 혼란스러운 시대가 배경입니다. 열강들의 거센 침입 속에서도 여전히 소수자일 수밖에 없었던 백성들은, 그저 평범한 인생을 살고자 했으나, 음모와 모략이 횡횡하던 권력자들에 의해 일방적으로 희생되었습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 묵직한 끈기로 대변되는 중국 인민들의 삶의 방식은 새로운 구원의 소망을 위해, 비록 느리지만 조금씩 저항하는 방법을 배워 나갔습니다.
진목승 감독은 기본을 잘 지킵니다. 그리고 유덕화, 사정봉, 성룡, 오경, 최근 중화권 영화계의 대세인 여우 판빙빙까지, 어떻게 다 모았는지 재주가 뛰어납니다. 흥미로운 점은 유덕화가 등장하는 씬은 유덕화의 방식으로, 성룡이 등장하는 씬은 성룡만의 방식으로 그 특징들이 뚜렷하게 드러난다는 것입니다. 오랜 배우 생활을 통해 감독만큼이나 영화 제작과 관련된 안목이 깊어진 유덕화와 성룡을 볼 때, 이 영화를 감독 진목승과 함께 공동으로 연출했다고 해도 무리가 없었을 것 같다는 추측을 해 보는 것도 재미있습니다.

On October 10, 1911, the Republic of China was founded. The revolutionary groups involved initially made Sun Yat-sen the provisional president, but they were soon forced to relinquish the position to Yuan Shikai, who was consumed by his desire for power. The country remained in turmoil, with numerous small and large warlord factions accelerating the colonial exploitation of the people. Despite the fierce invasions from foreign powers, the common people were still in a position of weakness, caught between the conflicts of the elites. They simply wished to live ordinary lives, but were swept away by the intrigues and power struggles of the rulers. Yet, the Chinese people's way of life, marked by steady perseverance, began to learn the ways of resistance, albeit slowly, with hope for a new salvation.
Benny Chan, as expected, does a solid job with the direction. He brought together a talented cast including Tony Leung, Jackie Chan, Nicholas Tse, Andy Lau, and the current popular actress Fan Bingbing. What’s interesting is that Tony Leung’s scenes reflect his own style, while Jackie Chan’s scenes showcase his unique approach, highlighting their individual characteristics. Given the extensive acting careers of Tony Leung and Jackie Chan, both have developed a keen sense of filmmaking, so it wouldn’t be surprising if they co-directed the film alongside Benny Chan. It’s a fun thought to consider.
