무라카미 하루키
며칠 전, 드디어 무라카미 하루키의 최신 장편 '1Q84' 3권을 완독했습니다. 그 이후 또 다른 수필집인 잡문집을 구입했지만, 스티브 잡스의 책을 먼저 읽게 되면서 당분간은 순서가 밀릴 것 같습니다.
무라카미 하루키의 전 작품을 모두 읽어보지는 못했지만, '상실의 시대' 이후 접했던 '해변의 카프카나', '1Q84' 는 초대형 베스트셀러였던 상실의 시대를 통해 형성된 불특정 다수의 팬층이 마니아층으로 변하는 하나의 이정표가 될 것 같은 느낌이 듭니다.
다음 작품이 나와 봐야 알겠지만, 전작들의 흐름을 고려했을 때 전 세계의 많은 일반 독자들은 이제 더 이상 ‘보통’ 독자가 아닌, ‘특별한’ 무라카미 하루키의 이름을 기억하는 특정한 사람들로 한정될 것 같다는 생각이 듭니다. 또한, 그의 작품이 전통적인 노벨문학상 선정 기준에서 점점 멀어지고 있다는 느낌도 무시할 수 없네요. 물론, 어디까지나 제 개인적인 생각입니다.

Haruki Murakami
A few days ago, I finally finished reading Haruki Murakami's latest novel, 1Q84 (Book 3). After that, I purchased another essay collection, Zatsubunshu, but since I started reading Steve Jobs' book first, it will have to wait for a while.
I haven't read all of Murakami's works, but Kafka on the Shore and 1Q84, which I encountered after Norwegian Wood, feel like a turning point where the broad, general readership that formed through the massive success of Norwegian Wood gradually transformed into a dedicated fan base.
We’ll have to wait for his next work to see what happens, but judging from the flow of his previous books, I have a feeling that many ordinary readers around the world will no longer be just "casual" readers, but rather, only a select group of people will continue to recognize Murakami’s name as something special. I also can’t ignore the sense that his works are drifting further away from the traditional selection criteria for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Of course, this is just my personal opinion.
