The Fifth Element에 대해 가장 논란이 많았던 점은 1997년 당시 제작비가 7천만 달러나 들어갔다는 사실입니다. 이 영화는 이해할 수 없을 정도로 돈만 낭비한 헐리우드 영화의 또 다른 아류작에 불과합니다. 뤽 베송 감독은 헐리우드에서 파견되어 프랑스 영화의 정체성을 망치기 위해 키워졌다고 봐도 과언이 아닙니다. 그렇게 많은 제작비를 쏟아부었지만, 영화가 전달하려는 의도는 무엇인지 명확하지 않습니다. 아니, 너무도 명확하지만, 그만큼 실망스러워서 하는 말입니다.

영화에서 등장하는 주인공들이 절대 악을 물리치기 위해 절대 선이 필요하다는 플롯을 따라가는 전개가 있습니다. 그리고 전 배우들의 일사분란한 연기 역시 감독 뤽 베송과 제작사 고몽의 낭비적인 돈 잔치 속에서 그저 신나게 놀고 있다는 느낌을 줍니다. 영화를 보면서 종종 이 영화가 인종을 전시하는 장면처럼 느껴지기도 했고, 어느 장면에서는 이 장면이 풍자인지 아니면 의도적으로 웃기려고 하는 코미디인지 구분이 되지 않는 경우도 많았습니다. 이런 것이 프랑스식 유머라면 할 말은 없겠지만요.

이런 현상은 영화 초반부터 끝까지 계속되고, 등장하는 배우들이 지나치게 감정 표현을 하는 것도 또 다른 문제를 일으킵니다. 분명히 많은 개런티를 받고 출연했을 브루스 윌리스는 영화 찍는 내내 마치 경로당에 나가는 기분으로 어슬렁거리고, 레지던트 이블의 여전사 밀라 요보비치는 중요한 역할인 제5원소 역을 맡으며, 별다른 노력 없이도 저능아 같은 역할을 잘 소화하는 듯합니다.

그리고 역시 기대를 저버리지 않고 떠벌리는 크리스 터커의 큰 입 역할! 누가 그를 대신할 수 있을까요? 크리스 터커만이 이 영화의 진정한 히로인입니다.

또 하나 더! 시퍼런 색의 외계인 오페라 가수, 노래 참 잘하더군요.

The biggest issue surrounding The Fifth Element, which sparked much discussion at the time, is that despite its massive production budget of $70 million in 1997, the film ultimately ended up as yet another mediocre Hollywood derivative with excessive spending. It seems as though director Luc Besson was sent to Hollywood as a spy with the sole purpose of erasing the identity of French cinema. The extravagant budget is evident throughout the film, yet its intended message remains unclear. Or rather, it is all too clear, but at the same time, so disappointing that one cannot help but express frustration.

The plot revolves around the idea that absolute good must emerge to defeat absolute evil—an overly simplistic concept. The actors follow this predictable storyline with unwavering commitment, making it seem as though they are merely participating in an extravagant, mindless celebration orchestrated by Besson and production company Gaumont.

Throughout the film, one cannot help but feel as though they are watching a grand exhibition of various races. At times, it becomes difficult to distinguish whether certain scenes are meant to be satire or outright comedy. If this is French humor, then there is little more to be said. Such moments persist from the opening sequence to the very end, and the excessive emotional expressions from many of the characters only add another layer of bewilderment.

Bruce Willis, who was undoubtedly paid a hefty sum for his role, appears to be casually strolling through the film as if he were visiting a senior center for a friendly chat. Meanwhile, Milla Jovovich, best known for her warrior role in Resident Evil, plays the crucial Fifth Element. Given her portrayal in this film, she seems perfectly suited for future roles as a simple-minded character without needing much effort.

And, of course, there is Chris Tucker, who delivers his signature loud and eccentric performance. Who else could possibly replace him in such a role? He is, without a doubt, the true heroine of this film.

Ah, one more thing—the blue-skinned alien opera singer. Now that was an impressive performance.
