신밧드가 등장하고, 알리바바와 40인의 도적이 등장하는 '천일야화' 가 아니라, '일일천화' 의 전통을 그대로 간직한 댄 브라운의 신작 로스트 심벌. 결론부터 말하자면, 이야기를 풀어가는 재주는 여전히 탄탄하여 전작들에게 손색이 없지만, 천사와 악마, 다빈치 코드, 그리고 로스트 심벌로 이어지는 획일화된 이야기 형식에는 이제 다소 지쳐버린 감이 있습니다.

또한, 이야기 곳곳에서 드러나는 댄 브라운의 '신의 영역을 탐구하려는 시도' 역시 성공적이지 못했다고 느껴집니다. 단 하룻밤 사이 벌어지는 엄청난 양의 이야기를 빠르게 전개하는 솜씨는 여전히 뛰어나지만, 핵심적인 사건 전개를 위한 설정들이 지나치게 억지스러워 보여, 댄 브라운을 더 이상 뛰어난 이야기꾼으로만 보기 어려웠습니다.

전 세계 독자들을 대상으로 펼쳐진 과장된 설정과 억지 전개가 로스트 심벌에서도 계속될 것이라고는 상상도 못했기에, 그저 놀랍고도 당황스러울 따름입니다.

Dan Brown’s latest novel, The Lost Symbol, does not follow the tradition of One Thousand and One Nights, where Sinbad and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves appear, but rather adheres to the tradition of One Day, One Story.

To get straight to the point, his storytelling remains solid and well-crafted, living up to his previous works. However, I find myself growing weary of the formulaic structure that has persisted through Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code, and now The Lost Symbol.

Moreover, Brown’s attempts to explore the realm of the divine feel largely unsuccessful. His ability to weave a complex narrative unfolding over a single night is still impressive, but the core plot developments rely too heavily on contrived and unrealistic elements, making it difficult to see him as anything more than a skillful fabricator of tales.

I never expected the exaggerated settings and forced storytelling, which have been a hallmark of his works, to persist into The Lost Symbol. As a result, I can only find myself surprised and somewhat disappointed.
