이유 없는 폭력 앞에서 저항조차 할 수 없이 당해야만 하는 공포… 그리고 폭력에 대한 분노를 표출할 기회도 없이 무력하게 스러져 가야 하는 현실. 선과 악의 대립 구도 속에서 결국 정의가 승리한다는 공식이 깊이 자리 잡고 있던 저에게 또 하나의 새로운 판단 기준을 제시했던 작품이 바로 1997년작 Funny Games입니다.
이 작품에 대한 마이클 하네케 감독의 애정은 상당했던 듯합니다. 그는 1997년 원작을 발표한 지 10년 만인 2007년에 미국 배우들을 기용하여 미국판 Funny Games를 다시 연출하였습니다. 개인적으로 저는 미국판을 먼저 보고 원작을 접하였는데, 같은 감독이 동일한 시나리오로 리메이크한 작품임에도 불구하고 이렇게까지 동일할 수 있을까 하는 점이 놀라웠습니다. 같은 배경, 같은 대사(물론…), 그리고 짐작컨대 이유는 정확히 알 수 없지만, 이렇게 완벽한 복제품을 만들어 낸 것 또한 감독의 의도였을 것이라는 생각이 들었습니다.
IMDB나 CINE21과 같은 플랫폼을 통해 살펴보면, 관객들은 원작에 더 높은 점수를 부여하는 경향이 있지만, 개인적으로는 2007년 미국판 Funny Games에 더 높은 점수를 주고 싶습니다. 원작을 먼저 본 관객이라면 미국판에서 받는 충격의 강도가 다소 완화되었을 것이고, 지속적인 고통에 점차 둔감해지는 것처럼, 같은 두 작품을 보다 객관적인 시각에서 비교해 보았을 때, 미국판의 배우들이 뛰어난 연기를 선보이며 극의 재미와 긴장감을 더욱 배가시켰다고 생각됩니다.

Funny Games (1997), directed by Michael Haneke, challenged my deeply ingrained belief in the classic narrative structure where good and evil are clearly defined, and justice ultimately prevails.
Haneke’s attachment to this film is undeniable. A decade after the original 1997 release, he remade Funny Games in 2007 with an American cast. I personally watched the American version first before viewing the original, and throughout the experience, I was struck by how identical the two films were. Despite being a remake, every element—the setting, the dialogue (naturally)—remained virtually the same. Though I can’t pinpoint the exact reason, I suspect that creating such a near-perfect replica was entirely intentional on the director’s part.
Both IMDB and CINE21 indicate that audiences tend to rate the original higher, but I personally prefer the 2007 American version of Funny Games. Viewers who watched the original first would likely have experienced a diminished shock factor in the remake. Just as prolonged exposure to suffering can desensitize a person, I attempted to evaluate both films from an objective standpoint. In doing so, I found that the outstanding performances of the American cast undeniably heightened the intensity and suspense of the film, making it even more engaging.
