약 10년간 한국에서 거주하며 보고 느낀 한국인과 한국 문화에 대한 통찰력 있는 분석을 담고 있습니다. 적지 않은 예시를 제시하며 논리적으로 짚어 나간 그의 시선은, 이방인의 관점에서 한국이라는 나라의 어두운 면을 날카롭게 파헤치고 있습니다.

스콧 버거슨의 대한민국 사용 후기는 제가 평소 조국 대한민국에 대해 가지고 있던 여러 생각과 놀라울 정도로 닮아 있고, 많은 부분에서 일치합니다. 그래서인지 그는 유달리 친한 친구처럼 느껴집니다. (작가 약력을 보니 공교롭게도 저와 동갑이기도 하네요.)

다만, 책의 전반부에서 보여준 날카롭고 객관적인 통찰력이 후반부로 갈수록 주관적인 불만과 분노로 채워진 점은 아쉬움이 남습니다. 그래도 마지막 책장을 덮고 난 지금, 그에게 친구 하자며 이메일이라도 보내고 싶은 기분이 드는군요.

This book offers an insightful analysis of Koreans and Korean culture, based on the author's experiences and observations during his ten years of living in Korea. He presents numerous examples and logically examines them, sharply uncovering the darker aspects of Korea from the perspective of an outsider.

J. Scott Bergeson’s A User’s Guide to Korea closely aligns with many of my own thoughts about my homeland, South Korea. The striking similarities in our perspectives make him feel like an unusually close friend. (Interestingly, according to his biography, we happen to be the same age.)

However, while the first half of the book provides sharp and objective insights, the latter half gradually becomes filled with subjective complaints and resentment, which is somewhat disappointing. Nevertheless, after closing the final page, I feel almost tempted to send him an email and suggest being friends.
