참 흥미롭지 않은 이야기를 읽었습니다. 늙은 치매 환자를 돌보는 어머니와 동성애자인 딸의 이야기로, 군데군데 감각적인 문장이 눈에 띄긴 했지만, 현재 시점에서 전개되는 문장의 방식이 지나치게 진지하게만 느껴져 흥미를 반감시켰습니다. 그래서인지 마치 조숙한 작가를 꿈꾸는 어린아이의 습작을 읽는 듯한 느낌을 받을 수밖에 없었습니다.

현재 위대한 개츠비를 읽고 있습니다. 뉴욕의 여름 열기를 묘사하는 장면들이 등장하는데, 그 묘사만으로도 뉴욕 여름의 끈적한 더위가 생생하게 느껴졌습니다. 반면, 김혜진 작가의 딸에 대하여 역시 여름을 배경으로 하고 있으며 곳곳에서 여름을 묘사하고 있음에도 불구하고, 정작 이야기를 읽는 동안 여름의 분위기를 전혀 느낄 수 없었습니다. 오히려 매섭게 볼을 때리는 차가운 바람을 정면으로 마주하는 듯한, 스산하게 말라버린 겨울의 풍경만이 떠올랐습니다. 이는 아마도 스콧 피츠제럴드와 김혜진 작가의 필력 차이에서 비롯된 것이 아닐까 생각합니다.

About My Daughter
A novel by Kim Hye-jin

I read a story that was truly uninteresting. It revolves around a mother caring for her elderly parent with dementia and her lesbian daughter. While there were a few sentences that stood out for their sensory detail, the way the story was written in the present tense felt excessively serious, making it difficult to stay engaged. Perhaps because of this, I couldn't help but feel that I was reading the work of a young aspiring writer, eager to appear mature but still at the level of a beginner's draft.

I am currently reading The Great Gatsby. The novel includes vivid depictions of the summer heat in New York, so much so that I could almost feel the city's sticky warmth through the words. In contrast, About My Daughter is also set in the summer and contains various descriptions of the season. However, while reading it, I never once felt the presence of summer. Instead, I was overwhelmed by the image of a barren winter, with harsh, cold winds striking my face. Perhaps this stark difference comes from the disparity in writing skill between F. Scott Fitzgerald and Kim Hye-jin.
