베놈

작년에 극장에서 영화를 보기 전, 상영된 프리뷰 영상 중에 베놈이라는 영화가 있었습니다. 본편이 시작되기 전에 나오는 예고편들 말이죠. 또 다른 마블 영화였기에, "재미있겠다, 꼭 봐야지"라고 생각했지만, 바쁜 일상 속에서 놓치고 있다가 최근에서야 보게 되었습니다.
말도 안 되는 개연성 문제는 다른 마블 영화들과 마찬가지로 따질 필요도 없고, 오직 재미라는 관점에서 보자면 성공적인 영화였습니다. 맞습니다, 재미있었습니다. 그럼 된 것이죠.
주연 배우인 톰 하디의 연기는 역시 흠잡을 데 없이 훌륭했습니다. (이 배우는 웃는 모습이 참 매력적이죠.) 그의 연기는 언제나 믿고 볼 수 있습니다. 그리고 여주인공을 맡은 미셸 윌리엄스 역시 뛰어난 연기를 선보였습니다. 저는 예전부터 미셸 윌리엄스라는 배우가 연기뿐만 아니라 존재 자체로도 강한 끌림을 가진 인물이라고 생각해 왔습니다. 정말 매력적인 배우입니다. 그녀는 위대한 쇼맨에서 휴 잭맨과도 호흡을 맞췄는데, 그때도 굉장히 인상적이었습니다.
미셸 윌리엄스는 연기력이 뛰어난 배우 히스 레저와 한때 연인이었고, 두 사람 사이에는 아이도 있었습니다. 하지만 안타깝게도 히스 레저는 세상을 떠났고, 미셸 윌리엄스만 남게 되었죠. 히스 레저는 다크 나이트에서 조커 역할로 유명했지만, 그 이전에 이안 감독의 브로크백 마운틴에서 동성애자 역할을 맡아 큰 호평을 받기도 했습니다. 연기력이 뛰어난 배우가 너무 일찍 세상을 떠나 안타까움을 자아냈습니다.
이야기를 하다 보니 또 다른 방향으로 새어나가네요.

이안 감독이 대중들에게 본격적으로 알려진 계기는 '와호장룡' 이었고, 그 이전에는 '결혼 피로연' 과 '음식남녀' 같은 작품이 있었습니다. 두 영화 모두 호평을 받았으며, 재미도 있었죠.
와호장룡에 출연했던 장쯔이는 이 영화를 통해 큰 인기를 얻으며 스타가 되었습니다.
한편, '밀레니엄 맘보' 에 출연했던 서기라는 배우도 있는데, 그녀는 데뷔 초기에 출연했던 성인 영화의 이미지를 벗어나는 계기를 마련했습니다. 물론 그 사실은 당시에는 잘 알려지지 않았지만, 후에 관련 사진이 인터넷에 유출되면서 큰 곤혹을 치렀고, 한동안 힘든 시기를 보냈다고 합니다. 하지만 서기라는 배우의 연기력만큼은 모두가 인정하는 분위기였죠.
영화를 보면 알겠지만, 서기는 묘한 매력을 가진 배우입니다. 개인적으로는 장쯔이보다 더 나은 배우라고 생각합니다.
생각해 보니 한 명 더 있군요. 이안 감독의 영화에서는 늘 신인 여배우가 스타로 떠오르는 경향이 있는데, '색, 계' 에서는 탕웨이가 스타가 되었습니다. 이런 점을 보면, 이안 감독의 신인 여배우를 보는 안목은 대단하다고 느껴집니다.
Venom

Last year, while sitting in a theater waiting for a movie to start, I saw a preview for Venom. You know, those previews that play before the main film. It was another Marvel movie, and I remember thinking, "That looks fun, I have to watch it!" But life got busy, and I missed the chance—until recently, when I finally watched it.
As with most Marvel films, there’s no point in nitpicking the lack of logical coherence. In terms of entertainment value, though, it was a success. Yes, it was fun. And that's what matters.
Tom Hardy, who played the lead role, delivered an impeccable performance as expected. (His smile is incredibly charming, isn’t it?) His acting never disappoints. Michelle Williams, who played the female lead, was also excellent. I’ve always thought that Michelle Williams is not only a talented actress but also someone with an undeniable natural allure. She’s truly a captivating actress. She starred alongside Hugh Jackman in The Greatest Showman, and even then, I found her to be incredibly charming.
Michelle Williams was once in a relationship with the exceptionally talented actor Heath Ledger, and they had a child together. Sadly, Heath Ledger passed away, leaving Michelle behind. Heath Ledger is widely known for his portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight, but before that, he received immense praise for playing a gay cowboy in Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain. His untimely passing was a heartbreaking loss for the film industry.

Director Ang Lee gained widespread recognition with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but before that, he had already received praise for The Wedding Banquet and Eat Drink Man Woman. Both films were well-received and enjoyable.
Actress Zhang Ziyi, who starred in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, soared to stardom after the film's success.
Similarly, the actress Shu Qi, who appeared in Millennium Mambo, managed to escape the image of her early career in adult films. Of course, this fact remained a secret at the time, but later, when explicit photos surfaced online, she faced a significant scandal and went through a tough period. However, her talent as an actress was undeniable, and she eventually gained recognition.
If you watch her films, you’ll understand—Shu Qi has an intriguing and unique charm. Personally, I find her more captivating than Zhang Ziyi.
Come to think of it, there’s another example. It seems that Ang Lee has a knack for discovering and elevating new actresses. In Lust, Caution, it was Tang Wei who rose to fame. Given these patterns, I must say, Ang Lee has an exceptional eye for casting rising stars.
