오랜만에 추리소설을 접하게 되었습니다. 몇 달째 이유 없이 머리가 뜨겁고 무거운 느낌이 들어, 어떤 책이든 제대로 읽히지 않았습니다. 물론 그럴 만한 이유가 있겠지만, 정확히 무엇 때문인지 알 수 없었습니다. 그러던 중, 친구가 몇 권의 책을 건네며 읽어보라고 권하였습니다. 키친 아일랜드 위에 놓여 있던 '스노우맨' 이라는 책을 받아 온 지 몇 주 만에야 처음으로 펼쳐 보았습니다. 억지로라도 읽어나가 보려 했지만, 좀처럼 집중이 되지 않았습니다.

일주일쯤 지난 후, 다시 서문부터 읽어보았습니다. 이상하게도 그제야 비로소 이야기에 빠져들 수 있었습니다. 손에서 책을 놓지 않고 몰입해서 읽었던 때가 언제였는지 기억조차 나지 않았습니다. 이삿짐을 자주 싸야 하는 터라 꽤 오래전 전자책으로 옮겨탔지만, 종이의 질감을 즐기는 습관이 있어서인지 자연스럽게 책을 멀리하게 된 것도 이유가 되었던 것 같습니다.

요 네스뵈의 장편 추리소설 '스노우맨' 은 그의 최근작 '폴리스' 까지 이어지는 해리 홀레 시리즈 중 일곱 번째 작품이라고 합니다. 다행히도, 이 책은 시리즈 내 다른 작품들과의 연결고리가 적어 처음 접하는 독자도 부담 없이 읽을 수 있다고 번역자가 설명하고 있습니다.

사실 몇 달 전까지만 해도 히가시노 게이고의 작품들에 푹 빠져 있었습니다. 그의 문체와 전개 방식에 익숙해져 있던 터라, 요 네스뵈의 서정적이면서도 문학적인 문체가 처음에는 낯설게 다가왔습니다. 하지만 다행히 금세 몰입할 수 있었고, 그의 서사가 흥미롭게 느껴졌습니다. 물론 눈에 거슬리거나 머릿속에서 쉽게 지워지지 않는 장면들도 적지 않았지만, 천만 독자가 열광한 스노우맨을 함부로 평가절하할 수는 없겠지요.

진작에 전자책으로 다운로드해 둔 '레드브레스트' 를 마저 읽은 후, 요 네스뵈라는 작가에 대해 다시 한번 깊이 생각해 보아야겠습니다.

It has been a long time since I last read a mystery novel. For months, I had been feeling a strange heat in my head for no apparent reason. Of course, there must have been some cause, but I couldn't quite pinpoint it. During this time, I found it difficult to focus on any book. Then, a friend handed me a few books and suggested that I give them a try. Among them, The Snowman was sitting on the kitchen island, and it took me several weeks before I finally picked it up. Even when I tried to read it, I couldn’t concentrate.

About a week later, I decided to start again from the prologue. Strangely enough, only then was I able to get absorbed in the story. I couldn’t even remember the last time I had carried a book around, unable to put it down. Since I often have to move, I switched to e-books quite a while ago. However, I have an unusual habit of enjoying the texture of paper, which might explain why I had not been reaching for e-books often. This, in turn, contributed to my distance from reading in general.

Jo Nesbø’s mystery novel The Snowman is the seventh book in his Harry Hole series, which extends up to his latest work, Police. Fortunately, according to the translator, this book has fewer connections to his other works, making it less burdensome for first-time readers of the series.

A few months ago, I was deeply immersed in the works of Keigo Higashino. Having grown accustomed to his writing style and storytelling, I initially found Jo Nesbø’s lyrical and literary approach somewhat disorienting. However, I was able to focus as I read on, and I found his storytelling intriguing. There were quite a few unsettling and disturbing scenes, but I couldn’t bring myself to criticize The Snowman outright, considering that it had captivated millions of readers.

I should finally get around to reading The Redbreast, which I had downloaded as an e-book some time ago, and then take another look at Jo Nesbø’s works with a fresh perspective.
