에디 세즈윅(Edie Sedgwick). 앤디 워홀(Andy Warhol)의 팩토리에서 그의 뮤즈로 지내던 그녀의 인생 한 단편을 다룬 이야기입니다. 시에나 밀러(Sienna Miller)가 그녀를 연기합니다. 전형적이고 통속적이라 할 수 있는 서구적 아름다움을 지닌 시에나 밀러의 얼굴을, 영화의 캐스팅 정보를 보기 전까지는 전혀 알아보지 못했습니다. 이것을 변신의 성공이라고 할 수 있을까요?
예전부터 이런 생각을 자주 했습니다. ‘친절’이라는 이름 아래 오지랖이 유난히 넓은 미국인들이 자존감은 매우 강한 반면, 상대적으로 자아가 약한 경우가 많지 않은가 하는 점입니다.
어쨌든, 물질이 강조되고 정신이 뒷전으로 밀려난 상황에서 흔히 나타나는 병폐 중 하나가 바로 ‘중독’입니다. 에디 세즈윅 또한 이로 인해 스물여덟의 짧은 생을 마감하게 되었다는 점을 영화의 결말부에서 암시합니다.
개인적으로 영화를 보며 아쉬웠던 점은, 실존 인물의 삶을 영화화할 때는 가능하면 화자의 객관적인 시선을 유지하여 관객이 직접 상황을 해석하고 결론을 추론할 수 있도록 하는 것이 더 바람직하지 않았을까 하는 부분입니다. 실제 존재했던 한 사람의 삶을 제삼자의 관점에서 단순히 가해자와 피해자의 이분법으로 나누어 결론짓기에는, 그 누구의 인생도 그렇게 단순하지 않기 때문입니다.

With her classically Western beauty, Sienna Miller was almost unrecognizable to me until I saw the casting credits. Could this be considered a successful transformation?
I have often thought about this: Many Americans, under the guise of kindness and an overwhelming sense of involvement, seem to possess immense self-esteem yet, paradoxically, a rather fragile sense of self.
In any case, addiction is one of the prevalent afflictions in a society where material wealth is emphasized while the mind and spirit are neglected. The film hints that Edie Sedgwick’s short life—cut off at the age of twenty-eight—came to an end due to such struggles.
Personally, what I found disappointing about the film was its approach to storytelling. When a real-life figure’s story is adapted into a movie, I believe it would be wiser to maintain an objective narrative perspective, allowing the audience to draw their own interpretations and conclusions. Life is rarely as simple as a black-and-white division between victim and perpetrator, and reducing a person’s existence to such a dichotomy fails to do justice to the complexity of human experience.
