나는 왜 민주당을 탈출했나 캔디스 오웬스 올해 들어 읽은 책들 중 단언하건대 최고. 저자 캔디스 오웬스는 전통적 흑인 지지 정당인 민주당을 등지고 공화당으로 자리를 옮긴 이 시대의 젊은 여성 인플루언서이다. 그녀는 흑인(미국에 거주하는 다른 유색인종을 포함)의 미국 사회에서의 정체성을 다양한 각도로 파헤치며 집단의 진정한 자유와 독립을 주장한다. 전통에 왜곡되고 예속되어 저물어가고 죽어가는 흑인이라는 이름의 집단을 보수주의자의 시각으로 하나님을 믿는 신앙과 함께 부활시키고자 노력한다. 책을 통해 색다른 시각을 가지게 되었다는 따위의 얘기가 아니다. 오히려 고정관념에 가까운 흑인사회에 대한 편견과 선입견을 밑바닥부터 고쳐 잡아준다. 정말이지 오랫만에 훌륭한 책을 읽었다.
